Much of Earth’s water lies out of sight, moving through spaces in soil and rock.
It fills pores and fractures
Groundwater is commonly held in small spaces between particles and in cracks in rock, rather than vast underground rivers. [1]
The water table marks a boundary
Below the water table, interconnected spaces are saturated. Above it, soil and rock can contain both air and water. [1]
Rain can replenish it
Water that infiltrates downward into saturated material provides groundwater recharge. [1]
It continues moving
Groundwater can travel slowly through the subsurface and eventually emerge into rivers, lakes, or the ocean. [1]
Rock properties matter

Above the water table, pores can contain both air and water. Damp ground is not necessarily fully saturated. [1]
Groundwater can emerge along exposed rock
